Challenge
Replacing custom, handcrafted countertops in a beautifully preserved Mediterranean-style home in an upscale Chicago suburb presents a unique challenge. Achieving precision in every detail is essential to ensure the new countertops seamlessly match the quality and character of the originals—while complementing the timeless cabinetry that anchors the space and preserving the warm, inviting aesthetic that defines the kitchen.
Solution
Capturing every detail during the templating process—including corbels, varied cabinet depths, and other architectural nuances—was essential to establishing a precise foundation for fabricating the new countertops. By integrating scans of the existing handcrafted surfaces into the CAD model, we were able to identify subtle variations in overhangs that are characteristic of artisan work. Leveraging advanced CNC-driven fabrication, the countertop manufacturer was able to achieve near-perfect tolerances, ensuring a precise fit and seamless finish that respects the integrity of the original design.
Results
The new countertops, crafted from Taj Mahal quartzite, introduce a fresh, elevated look to this period kitchen—enhancing its character without compromising the Mediterranean warmth that defines the space. Every detail captured during the templating process—down to the smallest architectural nuance—provided the fabricator with the information needed to execute with precision. The result is a flawless installation that honors the craftsmanship of the original design while introducing the subtle elegance of a timeless natural stone.
